Nobody sets out to fail at a Weight Loss Resolution

More and more Americans continue to become overweight and even obese. This can cause and even worsen many health conditions. It can also make your clothes uncomfortable and create a need to buy larger sizes. Gaining weight can also harm our self esteem and sometimes our relationships.

New Year’s Resolution: Weight Loss

Weight loss is one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions. Nobody sets out to fail at a weight loss resolution however, sometimes a task such as losing weight is extremely difficult and challenging and many of us don’t achieve our resolution. We’re the ones that end up making the same resolution over and over again each year with the dream and determination of achieving it. We’ve made the resolution previously and maybe this time, we’re even doing it quietly with determination like never before to see it happen.

Related resolutions: Exercise, Become More Fit and Healthier

As part of that weight loss goal, you’ve most likely added in exercise, becoming more fit and healthier. Acknowledging the need to drop pounds and setting the goal to do it are great first steps and to be admired. However, it is a lot to take on and quiet a journey.

Reasons many of us have previously made this same resolution

Some of the reasons many people fail at weight loss is our busy lifestyle. It is often difficult to make time to exercise even though we understand and know about its benefits. It can be challenging to always make the best food choices the majority of the time. Our busy lifestyles point us to convenience foods, fast food and tasty temptations instead of selecting foods that have less fat and calories. Many people also feel joining gyms, exercise programs and seeking professional help with weight loss gets too expensive.

Benefits of Weight Loss

There are many benefits to exercise and weight loss which can include:

* increased longevity

* more energy

* a better quality of life

* reduced risk of some cancers

* an enhanced mood

* reduced risk of coronary heart disease

* lower blood pressure

* helps with some reproductive problems

* improves osteoarthritis

* feel better and look better

Tips For Getting A Good Night's Sleep

Most people at one point or another in their lives struggle with getting the right amount of sleep. If you are regularly not getting enough sleep or getting interrupted sleep, this can impact your health in a large variety of ways.

Some of the most common reasons for not getting a good night’s sleep include:

●    Interruptions by children

●    Interruptions by pets

●    Caring for an infant, baby or toddler

●    Care giving for a child, spouse, parent or loved one with chronic illness or disease

●    Overwhelmed with work and putting in late night or early morning hours

●       Stress

Not getting enough sleep can cause you to be more irritable, fatigue easier and have difficulty concentrating. Unfortunately, there are many people who have formed the habit of living without enough sleep. They are walking around sleep deprived without even realizing it and the harm they are doing to their body. These people have done it so long that their body thinks it is normal.

Can you remember the last time you actually slept for more than seven hours straight? It is what our body actually needs to function properly. We need to get a proper night’s sleep with adequate rest for our wellbeing, our health, our brain and our body.

Not having enough sleep can lessen our reaction time, interrupt our concentration and it begins affecting other parts of our body and life too. Not getting enough sleep has been linked to many diseases and illnesses including Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes and more.

If you are not getting enough sleep, we would like to discuss it with you. If you cannot sleep through the night without waking up numerous times, we want to talk to you. If you are able to begin sleeping through the night and getting enough sleep, you’ll feel the impact almost immediately and you’ll be improving your overall well being too.

Tips for getting a good night’s sleep:

●    Wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends.

●    Go to bed at the same time every day, yes, even on weekends.

●    We actually sleep better when we are cool than when we are warm, so go ahead, save energy and money - turn down the thermostat and it might just improve your sleep.

●    Keep the room dark.

●    No media before going to bed can help your brain be more relaxed, calm and ready for rest.

Not getting enough sleep is a serious issue and can be and can cause serious medical problems. Contact us to discuss your sleep patterns and problems. We have sleep studies to determine if there is a medical issue causing you to not be able to get enough sleep or uninterrupted sleep.

5 Tips for Holiday Health

We are in the midst of the holiday season and our routines often are interrupted and changed. We begin seeing different foods and treats as we stroll the grocery aisles and the commercials are appealing to pick up, eat out and purchase specialty holiday foods. While all of this is great and a taste sensation, it can add a lot of extra calories very quickly.

Most of the time as our schedules change, fitness and exercise can get shoved aside, after all, we are busy and this is only a brief season. While we enjoy the tempting treats and delicious meals, most of us misplace our discipline with exercise and making the best food selections during this busy and fun filled holiday season.

Thinking about and implementing a healthy plan during this holiday season can help you maintain your overall health, fitness and weight. Before you begin a new exercise routine or if you’ve been indulging since Halloween and realize pounds are sneaking on and you want to intensify your routine, talk with us first to be sure you’re doing it all safely.

5 Tips for Holiday Health:

1)  Maintain your normal activity level. Watching more holiday movies, socializing and visiting more can all cause us to not be as active as usual. Make sure you are maintaining your current level of exercise throughout the holiday season.

2)  Understand you must be flexible and be ready and willing to know your schedule will be interrupted during the holiday season which means you may end up exercising at night instead of in the morning. Just adjust and keep moving.

3)  Even if you never count calories, you may want to consider keeping an eye on calories during the holiday season as these treats, drinks and meals seem to be loaded with an abundance of calories.

4)  Indulge and enjoy all of these wonderful holiday foods. If you can do it in moderation and cut back where you can, it can help you get through the season without packing on extra weight.

5)  Be sure you are getting proper rest and sleep especially during the holidays which can be fun, exhausting and even stressful.

Whatever you are doing this holiday season, whether you are spending it at home or with family and friends, do your best to stay healthy. We all know that what we eat and staying active impacts our whole life. Our choices not only impacts our waist lines, it impacts our overall health too.

A Season Of Being Thankful

There's nothing that compares to feeling better and not being slowed down because of extra weight.

Carrying around extra weight is linked to many diseases and illnesses including cancer, osteoarthritis, heart disease and diabetes? Too much body weight is also scientifically linked to many other diseases and illnesses.

As we start to drop a few pounds, you may immediately notice feeling better. This is because your health starts improving even when there's only a small weight reduction.

Our professional team wants to help you lose weight, keep it off and encourage you to live a healthy lifestyle. This plan will include exercise and nutritious foods.

Many people give up on the work that has been done so far and think it is better to put off beginning the new lifestyle until after the holidays. It's Just A Number

Change - it is something that happens to all of us. It never discriminates.

It is an inevitable force that impacts every part of our life and every single one of us at some point. Each day we are breathing, we get a little older and changes happen to us and around us.

No one can avoid change. Nobody can resist it even when we want to and try our best. As we celebrate our next birthday and the number creeps up, remember it is just a number, and it doesn't dictate our lives and abilities.

Each year, most of us will experience a change in some category of life. It could be in our families, in our careers, our environment or to our health to name a few. Some change is welcomed and embraced, and other changes are happening with dread and reluctance. There are celebrations and mourning throughout each decade of our life because of change. There are illnesses and disease to overcome or manage. Some of us will experience better jobs or lost jobs. While others will take chances with baby steps or leaps, all creating change which can be good or bad. Then, there are things like storms where we have no control and can only do our very best to recover and begin again.

While we cannot hold onto our youth, we can do our best to maintain our health. Part of this is maintaining a healthy lifestyle, weight and focusing on things we can do to help our overall wellness and fitness.

Our bodies take a lot of wear and tear, and they do need support over the years.  Our professional team can assist you with maintaining your health and even slow down the progression or loss associated with some diseases and illnesses.

We will do our best to help you hold onto your flexibility, agility, and mobility as well and as long as possible.

Maintaining a healthy diet, keeping a consistent exercise regiment can help us resist the change that happens to our bodies and age with a bit more grace.

While we may not be keeping up with a 25-year-old when we are 50 and may not be keeping up with a 40-year-old when we are 70, we can be our own unique very best at any age.

Most of us can work on becoming healthier than we ever have been. We are here to help you become fitter, drop the extra pounds, improve your health, and sleep better while improving your long-term health. While change is inevitable, our team is here to work with you to make the best of the changes that happen to our bodies as we age gracefully.

Flu, Flu Stay Away

It is time! Doctors encourage everyone six months and older to get a flu vaccine. The flu shot will take approximately two weeks to kick in and help protect you from the virus. Contact Kaner Medical Group today to get your flu vaccination.

While we would love to see a mild flu season, there is no guarantee. The best thing we can do is get the flu vaccine before you're in the middle of flu season. With that said, there are a few more things that you can do to help protect yourself from becoming ill with the flu.

Tips to avoid getting the flu:

     Get the flu vaccine soon

Wash your hands frequently or use hand sanitizer or antibacterial wipes when soap and water isn’t available.

Cough into your elbow/arm instead of your hand

     Stay away from sick people

Is it the flu or a cold?

If you have the flu, it feels different than a cold because you feel terrible all over. That "hit by a mack truck" feeling is much worse than what you'd experience with a common cold. The flu also comes on suddenly where a cold can come on slowly.

I've got the flu!

There is no cure for the flu. If you do get the flu, there are anti-viral medicines that can shorten the length of the virus. Anti-viral medications must be prescribed by a doctor and are only effective if taken within the first 48 hours of your first symptoms. There are also over the counter products to help treat the symptoms you will experience if you do catch the flu.

Tips to feel better when enduring the flu:

If you are suffering from symptoms of the flu, here's a few tips that might just help you feel better. Give them a try.

Stay home - the flu is very contagious and best and most responsible thing to do is call off work or school or any appointments, events, etc.

Rest and rest some more - This helps your body spend its energy healing.

Enjoy drinking plenty of water, tea, and juices. Eat broth-based soups.

Use over the counter medications to treat the symptoms you are experiencing such as a cough, pain, and fever.

The flu is expensive!

Getting the flu shot is the best way to prevent the flu. The flu vaccine is inexpensive especially compared to catching the flu.

If you get the flu, you'll have to miss time off of work, school, and even fun social events. Some people become so ill with the flu that they end up having to visit the doctor or even the hospital. Some also end up with a lengthy hospital stay. Sometimes lives are even lost as a result of the flu.

You can see the dollar signs adding up with the time off work, over the counter medications and potential doctor or hospital visits. Not to mention, the lost time of doing things you want to be doing besides being sick.

Kaner Medical Group has the flu vaccine available. We offer extended hours for your convenience. Contact us today and do the best thing known to help the flu stay away - get the flu vaccine.

Winning At Weight Loss

As the seasons begin to change, we look forward to upcoming pumpkin flavored everything, hot apple cider, and more baked treats. As we indulge in these delicious treats, we seldom think about burning extra calories by adding exercise. Enjoying these delicious fall treats can be the beginning of adding a few extra pounds this autumn. Then, there's Thanksgiving and Christmas, and we all know how easy it is to add a little bit more weight. It sneaks on easy, and we only wish it would drop off just as easy, but it doesn't.

Why are we obese?

You are most likely aware that obesity continues to be a problem in America as well as globally. There are many theories discussed as to why. Is it related to less activity and more convenience foods? Do we burn fewer calories than we did generations ago? Is it related to eating more and exercising less?

Whatever the reasons truly are, if you've ever tried, you know this is true: it is extremely challenging to drop any amount of weight once you have gained it. We change our diets, and we exercise, and we struggle to lose the weight we've gained. If we drop a few pounds, then we find it very challenging to keep those pounds off. It can be difficult to have the motivation necessary to do what you know is best.

Exercise!

We all know that exercise is beneficial to our health. However, exercise is often difficult to work into our already busy and frequently overcommitted schedules. Sometimes, we find ourselves not seeing the results we expected to see on the scales even though we feel we are doing all of the right things. We know that that exercising is still great for your body and mind, so you keep doing it because after all, it does make you feel better. Weight loss can even reduce the risk of numerous medical conditions including but not limited to: heart disease, reproductive problems, hypertension, stroke, and osteoarthritis.

Exercise can help you maintain your weight when combined with a sustainable diet. Afterall, exercising will burn some calories!

Weight Management Tips:

●      Weigh yourself once weekly

●      Restrict number of calories

●      Avoid high-fat foods

●      Control portion sizes

What is “The Flu”?

Here it comes!  The “flu” is an informal name for Influenza which is a highly contagious respiratory illness.

Most of us have had the flu at one time or another and you know how it begins, you might feel weak, rundown and ache all over. While that is probably stereotypically true, in reality the symptoms for everyone range from mild to severe.  For instance, people who are older, younger or living with asthma, allergies or other medical conditions feel the impacts of it even more than those with healthy lungs.

The absolute best way to prevent getting the flu is by getting a flu vaccine. This quick and relatively painless effort on your part is the best way to protect yourself, your coworkers, your friends and family from getting the flu later.

Why should I get a Flu Vaccine?

As mentioned before, the flu is highly contagious. It can spread easily to everyone around you. The flu can be spread on surfaces or through the air. If you are unfortunate enough to “catch” the flu you can expect to miss at least one week of work or school in most situations.

While it is inconvenient to stay home and costly to miss work and school, isolating yourself from others and giving your body time to heal is what you need to mend and get back to normal health. Another consideration is that it is also very inconsiderate to  your coworkers and classmates if you go to work or school knowing that you could potentially inflict this sort of illness on them, further impacting their ability to earn money or take part in activities and accomplish academic goals.

am sure once you are well your family, coworkers and friends will welcome you back and maybe even thank you for being so considerate.

When can I get the flu vaccine?

If you would like to start the fight against the flu before it ever has a chance to take its first swing, Kaner Medical group does have the flu vaccine available right now.

After you get a flu shot, you are not immediately immune to the flu. Your body will take from 2 to as many as 4 weeks to build up and develop the preventative antibodies that fight against the flu virus.

We know that flu season is right around the corner so it is recommended that you get the flu vaccine as early as possible.

How can I get vaccinated against the flu?

If you are interested in getting a flu shot for yourself and/or your family all you need to do is contact Kaner Medical Group and ask about our convenient Walk Up Flu Station or schedule an appointment.

As always we welcome the opportunity to serve you and your family and look forward to seeing you soon.

Let Us Help You Drop Pounds Before The Holidays

In just a few weeks, holiday decorations will be everywhere. Instead of not being comfortable in holiday clothing and being able to relax and enjoy yourself at gatherings, let us help you drop the pounds. Whatever progress you make before the holidays will make you look and feel better as you attend the holiday events instead of declining them.

We want to help eliminate some of the holiday anxiety that so many people experience. While we cannot help with all of the holiday stresses, we can help with the anxiety caused due to the concern of weight.

Being overweight is hard on your entire body and can make you tired. We will help you learn to control how much you eat and provide individual attention so you can keep the extra pounds off.

The cycle of eating the wrong foods and overeating is hard to break. You are always aware that you need to lose weight. You're living a life filled with procrastination for “WHEN” drop the pounds. Thinking about our weight too often isn’t healthy for us. It causes us stress.

As you begin a new weight loss program, the same mind set will continue. You’ll be thinking too often about how much weight you are losing and feel you are not losing it fast or steady enough.

Taking steps in the right direction no matter how small is something to celebrate. Healthy changes in habits, exercise patterns, food choices and quantities of food are all positive choices to improve your life. Even baby steps are to be recognized and praised as well as the giant leaps when they do occur. The consistency of the positive choices as well as the numbers on the scales going down is progress to your desired weight.

Think about how you are feeling as the healthy changes are being made. Notice the difference in your energy level and mental status. Reflect on how healthy habits, exercising, healthy food choices in proper quantities are going to help you feel better, do better, focus, improve sleep and function better.

The next time you are hungry, tired, in a hurry just skip the drive thru at the fast food chain. The binge on fast food for convenience is not a healthy choice. Think about how it makes you feel afterward. Wouldn’t a stop at the grocery store to grab a healthy option have been a better decision? Your body will feel better when the best choices are made. While these decisions impact your weight loss, they also change your life.

Praise yourself for the days you can stay on track. Don’t focus on the how it will affect your weight. Think about how it will affect your health. Remember, while it is about weight loss, the ultimate benefit is a healthier you.

Flu Immunization – Flu Information

Tis the season, it's flu immunization time.

We've heard people asking should I get a flu shot?

The Texas Department of Health Services recommends everyone six-months old and older receive the flu immunization. It is important for pregnant women, young children, older adults and people living with chronic health conditions to get the flu vaccine. The people in this group are at more of a risk for severe complications if they are unable to prevent the flu.

Flu prevention

The best way to prevent experiencing flu symptoms during flu season is by getting a flu shot.

Get your flu shot early in the flu season. The Texas Department of Health Services also urges people not to wait to protect themselves and their families by getting a flu shot as soon as possible.

The flu recovery time is approximately 5 days however, it varies greatly depending on a lot of different factors including your overall health. Help prevent the flu by washing your hands even more frequently with soap and water during the cold and flu season. Use hand sanitizer when washing your hands is not an option. Always cover your coughs and sneezes. Stay home if you’re sick and get plenty of rest so you have less of a chance of sharing your germs. Have a plan to care for sick family members at home.

Jackets, clothing, linens, utensils, and dishes used by those who are suffering from flu symptoms should never be shared without washing thoroughly first. Frequently touched surfaces, such as light switches and door knobs should be cleaned and disinfected especially if someone has symptoms of the flu.

Flu Information

The flu is contagious and is spread person to person. It can be spread to others that are up to about six feet away. The flu can be spread by droplets made when people with the flu, cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets have a chance of landing in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. These droplets can also possibly be inhaled into the lungs and possibly cause the flu. There is also a chance that a person can get the flu by touching a surface that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own nose or mouth.

Unfortunately, you can infect other people with the flu beginning 1 day before you even experience the first flu symptom. You can also pass it to other people for up to 7 days after becoming sick. Children can pass the flu for more than 7 days. Since the flu is contagious and can be passed on to someone else even before you know you are sick as well as while you are sick and even after becoming sick, it is important to take time off work, school, cancel social activities and stay home.

Symptoms of the flu begin 1-4 days after you are exposed and the flu virus has entered your body. Fighting the flu requires time and energy.

The flu can cause mild to severe illness. The flu comes on suddenly and flu symptoms can include:

  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Fever
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle or body aches all over
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Vomiting and Diarrhea (more common in children)

Getting your flu shot at the beginning of the cold and flu season is the best way to protect you and your family from suffering from the symptoms of the flu.The flu vaccine cost is only $10 cash or check at Kaner Medical Group.
